Can LP SmartSide Be Repainted?
Yes. LP SmartSide siding can be repainted when the panels are sound and the preparation and coating are compatible with the installed product. The first step is identifying whether the home has field-finished primed siding or a factory-applied finish such as ExpertFinish, because current care instructions are not identical.
We inspect each elevation for adhesion, fading, chalk, biological growth, open joints, damaged edges, impact damage, swelling, and trim concerns. A repaint can improve and protect a sound surface, but it cannot reverse structural deterioration or an active water problem beneath the coating.
Good Repaint Candidates
- Panels remain flat, firm, and securely attached
- The existing coating can be cleaned and prepared to a sound edge
- Joints, trim, and clearances can be corrected within the project scope
- The desired color and coating are approved for the installed finish
Repair or Replacement First
Soft, swollen, delaminated, deeply damaged, or persistently wet material may not provide a dependable painting surface. Midwest Painting Pros can replace damaged boards and complete related carpentry when that work is included in the proposal.

Old Coating
Peeling, chalk, fading, mildew, and poor adhesion affect how much cleaning, scraping, sanding, or spot preparation belongs in the scope.
Board Condition
Impact damage, edge swelling, loose panels, and soft material are documented rather than hidden beneath a new finish.

Our LP SmartSide Repainting Process
The written scope is built for the home in front of us. It may include these steps, adjusted to the installed siding and the coating manufacturer’s instructions.
Identify and Inspect
We review the siding profile, existing finish, adhesion, edges, joints, trim, exposure, and repair needs.
Clean Appropriately
Cleaning removes dirt, chalk, and biological growth without assuming one method fits every LP product. Current ExpertFinish guidance says not to use a pressure washer, so cleaning method is product-specific.
Let the Surface Dry
The siding must be dry and within the selected coating’s application conditions before further preparation and painting.
Prepare Failed Areas
Loose coating is removed and sound edges are prepared as the approved scope requires. Bare or repaired areas receive the specified treatment.
Repair Before Coating
Agreed board replacement, trim carpentry, and joint work are completed before finish application.
Apply the Specified Finish
We apply the documented exterior coating in suitable weather, paying attention to profiles, edges, joints, and trim.

The exact recommendation still depends on the installed LP product, the existing finish, the paint manufacturer’s current instructions, and jobsite conditions.
